These Intrepid Travelers Make a Bi-Annual Trek to Connect with St. Mary’s Mission:

In 1998, parishioners of Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Reading, Ohio, laid the groundwork for a mission trip to St. Mary’s Mission in Tohatchi
as part of their youth ministry. And for the past decade, youth from the parish and their adult chaperones have made the bi-annual trek that they
describe as being like “coming home.”
Fr. John Mittelstadt says that, “The parish decided to become a sister parish with St. Mary’s and promised their support and special prayers forus a result of our special relationship. “We try to remember them in a special way each month on the first Sunday, as they do us.”
Their experience as immersed mission volunteers for a week seems to change their individual lives and personal relationship with God through
their exposure to the very spiritual Native American people and their own selfless giving. “The experience teaches you to slow down a little bit, and
it teaches you what you can actually do without,” says group member Linda Horobin.
(Fr.) Mittelstadt adds that there is a continued special relationship with the people of God in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. “We are very proud of
them, and they are very proud of us,” he says. Even with all their selfless giving during their mission week, group members express a resounding gratitude for “getting more than we give!”
